When we gathered in the summer heat at Lakeview this past summer, the warmth
of the spirit matched the warmth of the days! We had a great week of music making,
worship, fellowship and learning. As the closing months of 2009 come into focus it
is time to begin thinking about the 2010 Texas Conference Choir Clinic to be held
at Lakeview Methodist Conference Center, July 5 -9.
As I write this message the Choir Clinic Board of Directors has just completed our fall meeting and All Saints’ Day is but a few hours away. Over the almost sixty years of Choir Clinic there have been many dedicated church members and musicians pass through the Lakeview gate as they came to learn and share their Christian experiences. I think about those folks that have joined the choir in the Church Triumphant and how we still miss them in our midst at Lakeview each summer.
For any who may not have heard, our 2009 Adult Choir Clinician, David R. Davidson was called to the Church Triumphant on September 5, 2009. We were blessed to have David as our clinician just a few weeks prior to his death and we extend our sincere prayers and thoughts to his family. The TCCC Board has made a contribution in his memory to the organ fund at Highland Park UMC in Dallas where a new pipe organ is currently being installed.
Choir Clinic 2010 promises to offer another exciting time and we look forward to the excellent clinicians that will journey to Lakeview to lead rehearsals and classes. Eric Nelson is a conductor of outstanding capabilities and leads choral groups in the university, community and church setting in Atlanta. For those Middle School campers who enjoyed Mark Burrows two years ago they will be excited to know that he has “moved up” to Senior High this year just as many of them have done. He looks forward to seeing many of those same singers this summer.
The Middle School choir will be in the hands of Mark Patterson a fine clinician widely known for his work with singers of this age as well as his many church and school compositions. Debra Tyree returns to Lakeview to again lead the children of the Elementary Camp choir. Dean McIntyre from the Global Board of Discipleship of the United Methodist Church will be with us to teach classes related to worship and worship planning. He will also be introducing classes to the many free resources available to United Methodists on the GBOD Worship website. Also returning to beautiful Lakeview for another time will be our handbell clinician, David Weck. David was with us at TCCC several years ago but he will be joined by his wife, Jane Holstein our organ clinician.
The Worship Team will be headed by Rev. Laura J. Bartlett with Noralyn Carpenter, Rosalie Branigan and Jane Holstein assisting. As always, they will be calling upon campers to assist in worship throughout the week. We will have a very special treat on Monday night when pianist Joel Raney joins organist Jane Holstein as they present a duet recital entitled: Keyboard Excursions. You will delight in the artistry of these two folks as they perform in duet and individually during the concert which will have visual enhancements. Joel will be with us only Monday and Tuesday during camp. He will be teaching advanced classes related to the piano in the church setting on Tuesday only.
There will be the always popular Variety Show on Wednesday night and we invite campers to begin to prepare for this event. They should come to camp prepared to audition for the show and bring any necessary music or accompaniment along with appropriate costumes. The creative service of Holy Communion on Thursday evening is often the highlight of the week for some folks as well as the closing Festival Concert to be held on Friday morning.
I urge you to visit this website often in the coming months as additional information is put into place for the 2010 camp. You may be particularly interested in scholarship information and adult class offerings as you prepare for camp.
In the meantime, be assured that I look forward to seeing you at the beautiful Lakeview Methodist Conference Center and the 2010 Texas Choir Clinic, July 5 – 9!!!
